Press Release - May 2009

Becoming a “Welcoming Congregation” means several things to members of Wakefield’s Unitarian Universalist Church. Officially, it means completing the Welcoming Congregation Program, and that achievement will be presented and celebrated on Sunday, May 31 at 10:30 in a regular service at 326 Main St.

Creating a safe space for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, and establishing a platform for addressing issues in the community are the principal aims of the Welcoming Congregation Program, designed by the Unitarian Universalist Association. Based on the Unitarian Universalist principals of affirming the inherent worth and dignity of every person and encouraging justice and equity, the congregation eagerly embraced the program.

The service will be led by Peter Stickel, a member of the church’s Worship Committee. From 1986 to 1990 Peter was the host and producer of Boston’s gay radio talk show, Boston’s Other Voice on WROR FM. “During those years I got a good sense of the loneliness and desperation of people that had little access to support. No doubt there are needs in our town, and maybe even some folks who would appreciate being welcomed into a faith community with open arms and unconditional acceptance,” offers Stickel.

In addition to specially selected hymns, anthems and other musical selections, the service features several guest speakers presenting LGBT issues that are still works in progress.

Following the service, a brief ceremony will take place as the congregation, led by the Rev. Maddie Sifantus, erects the new rainbow flag, an international symbol of pride and diversity.

The church, long a progressive voice in this community, welcomes everyone to attend this event.

Press Release - November 2008

The Wakefield Unitarian Universalist Church, 326 Main St, will present a free movie screening of "The End of America – The Documentary” on Sunday November 2 at 6:00 p.m. in their downstairs Social Hall, followed by an opportunity for discussion.

Scheduled to make its world premiere at the 2008 Hamptons International Film Festival, the documentary is an adaptation of Naomi Wolf’s book The End of America, which was on the /New York Times /Best Seller list for more than five months.

The End of America details the ten steps a country takes when it slides toward fascism. It’s not a “lefty” tome, rather a historical look at trends in once-functioning democracies from modern history that are being repeated in our country today. It gives any reader (or viewer of the movie) a much-needed history lesson and constitutional refresher. Most importantly, it puts the recent gradual loss of civil liberties in the U.S. in a historical context. The average American might not be alarmed at AT&T selling our private information to the Bush administration, but when this action is seen as part of a larger series of erosions and events, a pattern emerges with unfortunate consequences that become disturbingly clear.

Naomi Wolf takes the idea of “civil liberties” out of the realm of something that applies (or fails to apply) only to scary terrorists and “enemy combatants” and compellingly empowers the reader/viewer to understand that rights like habeas corpus and due process of law are not only worth protecting in the abstract, but vital to the USA as we know it.
